Endowment Leadership Institute (ELI)
In April 2004, we launched an unprecedented program for the Jewish community in San Diego– the Endowment Leadership Institute (ELI). Initially bringing together 12 Jewish organizations, synagogues, and day schools, we soon discovered that multiple organizations could successfully collaborate towards the common goal of establishing endowments for the long-term vitality
of our Jewish community.
Today, over 1,300 individuals and families have committed to various types of legacies that will yield an estimated hundreds of millions of dollars (with $70+ million already realized) to ensure a vibrant Jewish future. The estimate is made up of legacy gifts from San Diego donors as well as current endowment gifts.
In our current effort, the Jewish Community Foundation is engaging our Jewish organizations and creating unique individualized and specific goals, focusing on documentation of existing legacy gifts, development of major endowments, and ongoing stewardship of legacy donors. We currently have 20 organizations participating, with over 80 members of the community both professional and lay leaders, committed to the program. ELI’s success has gained national attention as a model for Jewish Communities, and is being replicated across America.
Lay and professional leadership representing all of the major Jewish organizations, synagogues, and day schools attend educational seminars on planned giving led by experts in the field of philanthropy. ELI participants also assist each other with issues of governance and long-term strategic planning through the Governance Leadership Institute.
