Philanthropy has played a unique role when unanticipated challenges suddenly hit. Nonprofits and individual funders can move quickly and more efficiently to mobilize resources and help those in need. Ongoing The Jewish Federation of San Diego County, Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego and Leichtag Foundation partnered to establish the San Diego Jewish Community COVID-19 Emergency Fund. The accelerating scale of COVID-19 required a coordinated, streamlined response to support those who were most vulnerable and impacted in San Diego’s Jewish community. These critical situations demand that we come together as a Jewish community to care for the most vulnerable among us.

April 2019 Jewish Community Foundation and the Jewish Federation joined together to create a fund that met the immediate physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of the victims of the Chabad of Poway tragedy and those impacted.
November 2018 California saw the deadliest and most destructive wildfires in the state’s history. With over 60 people dead and 300,000 people evacuated from their homes statewide, 9,000 plus brave firefighters fought fires across the state.

October 2018 Indonesia suffered great devastation with five major earthquakes, landslides, and a tsunami, all within a few months. The islands of Lombok and Sulawesi were hit the hardest, with approximately 1,900 deaths, 420,000 people displaced, and 191,000 in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

September 2017 After Hurricane Harvey flooded Texas and left hundreds of thousands of people without power or access to food and safe drinking water and Hurricane Irma brought death and destruction to Florida, emergency shelters were stressed and aid was desperately needed. Municipal services, roads, schools, and community institutions were shut down, creating a challenge for rescue workers who were trying to reach the thousands of people stranded.
