Publicly Traded Securities and Mutual Funds

Donating appreciated securities often allows donors to make a bigger philanthropic impact, and to receive greater tax advantages than donating cash or selling the stock and donating the proceeds. By donating appreciated securities, you bypass capital gains tax and may deduct the fair market value of your gift.

Please call 858-279-2740 or email us for further instructions.

Wire Transfer

You may make a contribution via a direct bank wire to the Foundation. Please call 858-279-2740 or email us for further instructions.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) is an agreement between you and the Foundation. In exchange for assets irrevocably transferred to the Foundation and designated to the charities of your choice, you receive regular fixed payments for life backed by the resources of the Foundation. The older you are, the greater the payment.

After the beneficiary’s lifetime, the remaining principal in the annuity goes to the named charity or charities. The Foundation engages Union Bank to manage its CGA program. Several types of assets may be gifted in exchange for a charitable gift annuity such as cash and appreciated securities.

Please contact Sharleen Wollach, Chief Impact Officer, to discuss the payment options for your gift annuity or call 858-279-2740.

Other Gifts

Gifts of Real Estate

A gift of real estate to the Foundation is an excellent way to unlock the full appraised value of a property, allow for significant tax and economic advantages, and donate to worthy causes. The Foundation can help you structure a charitable gift of a vacation home, an investment property, land, or commercial or residential real estate.

By donating real estate, you bypass capital gains and may deduct the fair market value of your gift. The proceeds can be distributed to a donor advised fund, family foundation or endowment fund. Property may also be used to fund a charitable remainder trust, which produces lifetime income for the donor.

To explore gifts of real estate, please contact Jeremy Pearl, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, or call 858-279-2740.

Bonds, Mutual Funds, Private or Restricted Stock

To transfer bonds, mutual funds, private or restricted stock, please contact Jeremy Pearl, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, for instructions or call 858-279-2740.

ChaiSouthAfrica

In 2002, a volunteer group of South Africans from San Diego initiated an international program called ChaiSouthAfrica, a fund that former South African Jews could contribute to in order to assist friends and family in need back home.

Through the ChaiSouthAfrica Fund, the Foundation has awarded millions of dollars to support the aging Jewish communities in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Funds provided to 13 nursing homes and homes for the developmentally disabled are changing the lives of thousands of residents, enabling those who need it most to live their remaining years in dignity and comfort.

Memorial Fund

Commemorate a loved one’s life by establishing a memorial fund. This can be set up instantly and provides an opportunity for you, family members and friends to immediately make contributions. You and your family can then take time deciding where to give to best honor your loved one.

For more information on establishing a Memorial Fund, contact Sharleen Wollach, Chief Impact Officer, or call 858-279-2740.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Fund

It’s the gift that encourages giving. Bar and Bat Mitzvah funds allow parents, grandparents, relatives and friends to mark Judaism’s coming of age ceremony with one of the most important practices in the Jewish tradition: giving.

For more information on establishing a Bar/Bat Mitzvah Fund, contact Sharleen Wollach, Chief Impact Officer, or call 858-279-2740.

Cryptocurrency

Donating cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, may result in a tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the donated cryptocurrency (as determined by a qualified appraisal). Your gift to charity may also be larger because instead of paying income or capital gains taxes, the Jewish Community Foundation will receive the full value of your contribution. Donors should consult with a professional tax advisor prior to gifting cryptocurrency. We partner with Giving Block to process this donation. Giving Block’s processing and administrative cost is currently 4.65% of the U.S. Dollar-denominated proceeds. The net proceeds can be credited to your Donor Advised Fund or directed to any 501(c)3 charity.

Please notify us of your gift at finance@jcfsandiego.org with the following information:

  • Full Name
  • Address
  • Phone
  • Exact amount of the crypto gift (e.g., BTC amount)
