Debbie Deverett Growing up in Ohio in a very traditional Jewish family, I vividly remember the blue tzedakah box that sat prominently on our kitchen counter. Giving was simply part of life—one of the core values instilled in us from a young age. At the time, I didn’t think much about who the money was helping; it just felt like we were doing something good. Fast forward to adulthood and married life in Toronto, where I was fortunate to be immersed in a vibrant Jewish community—through synagogue, Jewish day school, and an incredibly generous and philanthropic network. It was there that I first became involved with Federation and became a Lion of Judah. But it wasn’t until our move to San Diego, when we were starting fresh, that I truly understood the impact of community. We found our footing again through the San Diego Jewish Academy and the Jewish Federation. As my involvement deepened over the years, endowing my Lion felt like a natural and meaningful step. Since then, I’ve become even more engaged—not only with Federation but with the broader Jewish community. Today, as Chair of the Women’s Philanthropy Board, I consider it an honor to ensure that my legacy gift will help sustain a strong, thriving Jewish community for future generations. My hope is that this gift will also set an example for my children, inspiring them to live their values through tzedakah and tikkun olam. My journey with Federation has brought incredible friendships and a deepened connection to Jewish life—both here in San Diego and in Israel. I’m proud to be part of building something lasting.
